OCT, 14th - Last week I decided to give in to the booktok hype and get myself a copy of The Spanish Love Deception. The main reason was because I needed a lighter read, like a palate cleanser, after all the depressing/sad shit I've been reading lately. The book did what I wanted it to do but of course it wasn't perfect. You can tell it's a debut and it is indeed full of clichés as well as so many unnecessary repetitions: a professional editor would have taken so many pages out. My main problem with the novel was the last third of it and the reason for it was the smut: it was so cringy and did nothing for me; and the language used felt so out of character. Anyway, as I said the book did what I wanted it to do and that's enough.
OCT, 15th - Finally reached part iii in Dune. Not gonna lie, part ii dragged on and on and on. In other news I have started my reread of Piranesi - been meaning to pick it up again since it was announced it won the Women's Prize. Cannot wait to revisit this story.
OCT, 16th - Earlier this week I got in the mail the new release by Duermevela Ediciones (a new indie Spanish publisher solely focused on fantasy and sci-fi) which was La mujer de Terracota by Zen Cho (The Terracotta Bride is the original title) and read it in one go. Wasn't very long, less than 100 pages, and it was a nice read but I always have the same feeling about short stories: I wish they were longer. This one though is definitely a title worth re-reading.
OCT, 17th - I'm on a roll! This week has been great in terms of my reading... I finished yet another book: Beautiful World Where Are You. The new Rooney has been getting mixed reviews but she is an author that intrigues me a lot and I wanted to see what I'll make of her new story; I enjoyed it a lot. Possibly because dysfunctional characters are one of my favourite type of characters to read about and this novel is all about those. I am well aware this book won't work for all readers but it did for me. Finally, I also finished Piranesi which was a reread for me and oh, my god was it wonderful! This second time around I could focus on other aspects of the story, especially the little clues Clarke gives along the way, so many layers in such a short book and so many aspects yet to explore. It won't be the last time I reread this.
